Following studies from both McKinsey and the Harvard Business Review companies with a strong sustainable purpose achieve greater success. They achieve this through :-
70% of US customers would pay up to 5% more for a “green” product if it met the same standards as a mainstream product.
Unilever produced a washing up liquid that used significantly less water than its competition and consequently outpaced its rivals by 20% in growth terms.
3M have saved an estimated $2.2 billion since introducing its ”pollution prevention pays”
By converting 20% of its vehicle fleet to electric or hybrid FedEx have reduced fuel consumption by over 50 million US gallons
Strong sustainable values and a strong sense of purpose reduce interventions and indeed may encourage regulatory support eg grants.
Employees that support the company’s values are more highly motivated. As an example of this when Unilever released their Sustainable Living Plan they became the third most searched company for jobs on Linkedin after Apple and Google.
A clear sustainable purpose gives a focus and direction which in turn drives optimal investment.
